Search Synonyms

The Synonyms feature lets you set up different versions of terms in your product catalog. With synonyms, shoppers can use familiar search terms and receive expanded results. When someone searches for a term, the search also looks for its synonyms. This means you don’t have to add every possible term and variant to your item records.

For example, if a shopper searches for pants but your catalog mostly uses trousers, you’d normally have to add pants as a keyword to every item—which takes a lot of time. With Synonyms, you set pants as a synonym for trousers one time, and now searching for pants brings up both pants and trousers.

Note:

When you set up search synonyms, make sure the terms are in fields you’ve set as search fields with a Keyword match type. This is necessary because only indexed search fields are included in the search.

For example, if you set purple, magenta, violet, and lavender as synonyms, shoppers can find the closest shade. But you can only use the synonym if the product color is in the Product Description field, and you’ve set that field with a Keyword match type.
